  15. Murderous Farce

  17. <p>     When an army mutiny and rioting forced President Mobutu Sese
  18. Seko to join with the opposition in a coalition government last
  19. month, many Zairians rejoiced over what they hoped would spell
  20. the end of Mobutu's 26-year lock on power. But last week, as
  21. violence once more swept Zairian cities, the coalition was in a
  22. state of disarray--and Mobutu was still there.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     The latest unrest was prompted by Mobutu's ouster of his
  25. new Prime Minister, Etienne Tshisekedi, a leader of the
  26. opposition coalition, who had angered Mobutu by refusing to
  27. swear allegiance to him. Mobutu named a lesser opposition
  28. figure, Bernardin Mungul Diaka, as replacement. But Tshisekedi
  29. refused to step down. Instead, he rallied opposition support,
  30. and the standoff continued. What had started as a forced
  31. experiment in multiparty democracy had become a murderous farce,
  32. and it was far from over.
